Abstrakt EN: The East African coast has been known to archaeology as an area rich with heritage of Islamic towns, which engaged in long-distance trade, and flourished throughout the second millennium CE. These sites, especially those with remains of monumental architecture, were excavated relatively early, in the late colonial or post-colonial era. While some sites have been surveyed in recent years in greater detail, the layout of majority of them may be assessed solely on the basis of outdated hand-drawn layout plans. This complicates the interpretation of the past townscape morphologies. This paper highlights the benefits of re-planning the sites with modern technologies, especially 3D scanning and photography. Such planning provides a record of the state of preservation and as such it is important for heritage management or attractive presentation of these sites, and also allows a more detailed study of the spatial urban relationships. The present paper discusses how modelling of the preserved built environment, specifically stone architecture, may enhance understanding of complex spatial configurations, that were long disregarded at the expense of monumental features. Some results of cooperation between the author of the University of West Bohemia and the Zamani Project, University of Cape Town are presented, that aim to shed light on spatial configuration on several precolonial towns in Kenya on the Swahili coast.
